English: St. Francis Xavier parish is the oldest in Indiana, dating back as early as 1734. The present church, built in 1826, is 60 feet wide and 115 feet long. St. Francis Xavier became the cathedral of the newly created Diocese of Vincennes in 1834. The building served as a cathedral until 1898 when the Diocese of Vincennes became the Diocese of Indianapolis. When the Diocese of Evansville was created in 1944, the parish moved under its See. The interior pillars are made of yellow poplar trees. The interior murals were painted by William Lamprecht of Munich, Germany, in 1870. The Von Gerichten Art Glass Company of Columbus, Ohio executed the stained glass windows in 1908. Pope Paul VI elevated the Old Cathedral to the status of Minor Basilica in 1970.
