A platform chassis or 'punt' chassis is a flat sheet chassis with raised strengthening ribs. One of the best known examples was the VW Beetle; the simplicity of removing such a rolling chassis together with the engine was a factor in encouraging its re-use for beach buggies etc. These are almost always steel, although some (Lotus Elite) have been made of fibreglass.
A 'punt' chassis is a platform chassis with deeper vertical sides, making it stiffer and stronger for vertical loads. These are sometimes found on armoured vehicles, where the armoured hull can act as the chassis.
