Category:Pre 1894 house numbers in New Orleans

Until the 1890s street address numbering in New Orleans was not well standardized.

In 1893/1894 the City of New Orleans assigned numbers to each block, heading up and down from Canal Street and inland from the Mississippi River; the hundreds (and when needed thousands) figure designated each specific block, and the two lowest digits the sequential address number. On streets running perpendicular to the river, odd numbers on the downtown side, even numbers on the uptown side. On streets running parallel to the river, odd numbers are on the lake or back side, even numbers on the river or front side.

For some years after the new (current) system was officially put into place, in common practice both numbering systems were often used, referred to as "old" and "new" numbers.
