The Pugalier is a dog hybrid. It is a mix between a Pug and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

The breed was created by ACA Breeders Kennels in Melbourne Australia in the 1990's. At the time the choice of short haired small dogs was limited to terriers, beagles, pure pugs and the like. Pugs were very popular but had serious health issues with their shortened noses causing breathing and eye issues.

Adding the cavalier created pug looking pups, generally with short coats, elongated snouts that protected eyes and enabled easier breathing. In fact they resemble the original pugs before breeders decided shortened faces overrode health.

These fun loving, low maintenance dogs are great family pets and rarely end up in animal shelters.
