Pushkarini (IAST Skt: पुष्करिणी) is a type of bluish lotus found in clear water bodies of South Asia. It more generally means "any pool, pond", particularly one that is clear enough to host numerous blue lotus. Pushkar (पुष्कर) is a synonym for water. In historic architecture, pushkarini refers to a manmade water tank near temples, or built as public infrastructure for travelers and pilgrims. They are typically provided with steps from all sides, can include elaborate artwork along the periphery or center of the pond, such as statues. Larger pushkarini would generally include mandapas (pillared halls, choultery) as public rest and sitting area.
Pushkarini are sometimes considered as a type of stepwell, but differ from deep stepwells (vaav, baori) that are dug to access the ground water. In historic manuscripts and ancient literature, the term pushkarini is generally reserved are open pools of water tanks with steps where the water surface and steps are exposed to the sunlight.
