Category:Ransom of Hector sarcophagus (AMI 6167)

English: A marble Roman sarcophagus of the second century AD, found in Ladokhori, Thesprotia, Epirus, northwestern Greece. The cover depicts the two dead, large fragments of which are missing, while the metopes show Nereids with Tritons and ichthyocentaurs. The left narrow side depicts a warrior preparing for battle, the right one the mourning of a dead soldier; either mourning for Hector or Briseis and Achilles mourning Patroclus. The large side shows Achilles dragging Hector's corpse with his chariot, Hector's Priam offering Achilles ransom for the body while Hermes and Briseis watch, and a second chariot carrying gifts and treasure for Achilles from the Trojans. The sarcophagus was discovered in 1975, and has been exhibited ever since in the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina.
