English: Rutherford, Colonel Robert William

b. 1857
d. 1933.

« Born in Northumberland, England, he arrived in Nova Scotia in 1866. He was educated at the Halifax Grammar School; King's College, Windsor, N.S.; Royal Military School, Halifax; entered regular military service serving as: 2nd Lieut. with 66th Regt. (1879); lieutenant, RCA; Capt. "B" Company RCA, 1887. He was stationed in Halifax in the late 1870's; Kingston, Ont. in 1880; Ottawa later; Capt. RCA 1883; served in North-West Rebellion in 1885 at which time he executed many sketches and kept a diary of the event. Even before he entered military service he was an amateur painter. In the early 1880's he studied at the Ottawa Art School. His water colours documented specific military actions including the relief of Battleford; battle at Cut Knife Hill; and operations against Chief Big Bear's Band. At the time of his service during the North-West Rebellion of 1885 he was acting Quarter-Master with the RCA. As his military service progressed he rose through the ranks: major (1896); It.-col. (1905); col. (1907); Assist. Adj. Gen. for artillery at headquarters (1901); Dir. of Artillery (1904); Commandant, Royal School of Artillery (1907); Master-gen. of the Ordinance (1908-1912). During the North-West Rebellion he supplied illustrations to the Canadian Illustrated News. His painting "Surrender of Poundmaker" was exhibited in the Library of the House of Commons in Ottawa, and acquired by the Public Archives of Canada. A number of his water colours and drawings are in the collection of The Devonian Group, Calgary. His diary of the North-West Rebellion of 1885 was sold at the Montreal Book Auction, Sept. 15, 1977, Item 103 for $16,000, but a microfilm of the diary is in the Saskatchewan Archives at Regina. No one seems to have found the exact date of his death. He was a member of the Rideau Club in Ottawa. A fire which gutted the Rideau Club in 1979 may have destroyed records which could have shed light on his death date. An exhibition of his drawings and watercolours were exhibited at the Univ. of Calgary Art Gallery in August of 1976. » – rcip-chin.gc.ca
