Church founded in the 14th century by sailors as a small chapel dedicated to San Nicolo di Tolentino. From the ancient Gothic building is not much left. At the end of the XVIth century, the original chapel was transformed in a very large church. Two aisles, the transept and the dome were added (apse by Pietro Verde and Jo. Minico Pepe, 1578-87) and some connecting rooms were built, which constituted a hospital already functioning since 1596.
The complex was maintained with the the donation of fishermen as shown by the bull of Gregory XIV of 1590. In the Baroque period the apse was demolished and one additional transept built.
At the beginning of the 18th century were added a second dome and the choir. Around 1710 the main altar was designed by the father of Cherubino d'Aversa' then executed by the marble worker Gaetano Sacco; in 1731 the bell tower with the clock was built at the University expenses; in 1755 the altar was erected with colored marble and between 1780 and 1785 the entire building was covered with marble panels; in 1779 the Neapolitans Luca Moschetti and Eugenio Scrimitone began the stucco work. Following the earthquake of 1883 the dome of the nave was replaced by a coffered ceiling. On 29 July 1787 the church obtained the Decree of Coronation of Our Lady of Loreto.
In the church we find: a 16th C. table of the Madonna of Loreto painted by Decio Tramontano (1560); two paintings by Cesare Calise: one representing the Martyrdom of St. Bartholomeo (1596) while the other depicts S. Nicolo di Tolentino (1607), paintings by Alfonso Di Spigna: The Rest on the Flight into Egypt, Adoration of the Nativity, The Nativity, Madonna, S. Restituta, S. Agnello. by Aniello Laudello : Madonna and Saints with the depiction of the mysteries of the Rosary (1581). Painting by the local Giuseppe Capuano : SS. Trinity with St. Sylvester Pope and St. Vincent Ferrer (1777); wooden crucifix by Di Falco (1761).
