English: Designed by Edwin W. Houghton and built in 1904 around the same time as the adjacent federal building, the P-I moved their offices into the building that November. After the P-I relocated to a new location at 6th & Pine Streets in 1921 the building underwent a major reconstruction as part of the Metropolitan Tract project that narrowed the entire building (widening of 3rd Avenue in the 1900s necessitated creating an arcade for the sidewalk) to bring it in line and style with the neighboring Cobb, Stuart, Henry & White Buildings. It was henceforth known as the Douglas Building.
