English: Serious Request is a family of annual multi-day, multimedia fundraising events for International Red Cross initiatives, typically hosted by radio stations in the week before Christmas. The project was first held in 2004 by Dutch public pop music radio station 3FM. Serious Request projects have since been adopted in Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, Kenya, South Korea, Latvia and Portugal. During the event, three radio DJs live in a "Glass House" for six days on a juice-only fast, while broadcasting non-stop to sponsor a particular theme. While the DJs are in the house, they play songs requested by people in return for their donations. Celebrities help the project by donating money and auctioning personal possessions or performances. Additionally, members of the public run a variety of supporting initiatives, to raise more funds.
In the Netherlands the Glass House is placed in a different city every year. In Kenya instead of raising money, the event sometimes simply promotes awareness, for instance to advocate HIV-testing, or peaceful elections.
