Category:Shand's Emporium, Hereford Street

English: Shand's Emporium in 88 Hereford Street, Christchurch, was significant as one of the oldest commercial buildings in the central city and one of the few to survive from the early period of Pakeha colonisation. Unlike other timber buildings of that era, Shand's was never replaced by a more substantial stone or brick building. Now dwarfed by its neighbours, it remains as a rare example of early commercial timber architecture in Christchurch. Well, it was dwarfed by its neighbours, but for a while, it was the only building standing on that side of the road. It has since been relocated to Manchester Street.
