In 1850, the French mathematician and engineer Amédée Mannheim created a slide rule with a cursor and a useful combination of scales: X (C, D) and X-square (A, B) pairs; also, sine (S) and tangent (T) scales on the back side of the slider – but the slider had to be turned to use these scales on front.[1]
