English: Located at the site of a 6th-century monastery founded by St Fachtna; a “big church” existed already in 1152 when it was designated a cathedral which was probably rebuilt at the end of the 15th century. Alterations and repairs followed in the 1580s, in 1696, and between 1708 and 1719. The current spire was erected in 1806 under the direction of Michael Shanahan. The north transept was enlarged in 1810–12, probably after plans by Richard Morrison. More changes followed including a remodelling of the chancel and the transepts by the architect Arthur Hill. (See Frank Keohane, Cork City and County, p. 559–560; DIA entry.)
