This cave is the reason for Pittenweem's name. Weem means a place and Pit means a cave. It can be found off Cove Wynd in Pittenweem. In the 7th century the cave was reached by boat (there was no harbour then) and was reputed to be a favourite place for smugglers. Since the 1930s it has been reconsecrated as a Christian shrine.
