Stamps of the Principality of Liechtenstein

To the history of the Liechtenstein Post:

- 1719 - 1817: strong competition between the German "Kaiserliche Reichspost" and the Austrian "k.k. österreichische Post" on the territory of Liechtenstein with many lordly and Imperial city heralds, inofficial "Landkutschen" ("country coaches"), rafters with postal transports, foot heralds...etc., mostly between the Principality of Liechtenstein and the Austrian Vorarlberg

- 20 August 1817: the tavern "Post" in Balzers opens as first official "k.k. österreichische Briefsammelstelle" on the territory of the Principality of Liechtenstein (already again closed in 1819, re-opening in 1827 (1839 awarded to the status of a "Postamt"))

- 1826: Austria and Graubünden ("The Grisons" (Switzerland)) close a "Postal Treaty" with Liechtenstein, mainly for the postal traffic on the route Lindau - Liechtenstein - Chur

- 1 March 1845: opening of a "k.k. Briefsammelstelle" in Vaduz

- 5 June 1852: issue of the first own stamps for Liechtenstein by the Austrian postal administration

- 1863: the first official Liechtenstein Post Coach goes daily between Balzers and Feldkirch and retour

- from 1 February 1912 until 1 March 1920: "K.u.K. Österreichische Postverwaltung im Fürstentum Liechtenstein" according to a "Postvertrag mit Österreich" (German for "Postal contract with the Austrian Post" (Imperial and Royal, and after), cancellation of the postal contract with Austria to the 1 March 1920)

- from 1 March 1920 until 31 January 1921: "Fürstlich Liechtensteinische Post" - postal contract ("Konsortialvertrag") with a "Konsortium für die Beschaffung und den Vertrieb von Briefmarken der liechtensteinischen Regierung" with Austrian currency

- 1921: "Fürstlich Liechtensteinische Post" - stamps of the Liechtenstein Post according to the "Konsortialvertrag" with Swiss currency (after 31 January 1921); But already after a short time turned out this "Konsortium" as an unserious society, countless mistakes in colour, drawing and paper artificially served to heat up the philatelic business. Lastly, the Princely government of Liechtenstein was forced to cancel the "Konsortialvertrag" in 1921.

- from 1 February 1921 until 31 December 1999: "Fürstlich Liechtensteinische Post" - with a postal contract with the Swiss Post as part of a "custom union" between Switzerland and Liechtenstein; For the time from 1 February 1921 until 30 September 1921 were valid also Swiss stamps in Liechtenstein.

- 1 January 2000: founding of the "Liechtensteinische Post AG" (2005ː the state of Switzerland acquires 25% of the shares of the "Liechtensteinische Post AG")

- 1 January 2006: founding of the "Philatelie Liechtenstein" from the former "Amt für Briefmarkengestaltung" and the "Postwertzeichenstelle" as subordinated part of the "Liechtensteinische Post AG"

- September 2009ː founding of the "LIE-Service AG" as sub-enterprise of the "Liechtensteinische Post AG" and 2011 an "Österreichisch-Liechtensteinische Postbeteiligungs-GmbH"

Liechtenstein

According to the Law of May 19, 1999, on Copyright and Neighboring Rights, "Copyright protection shall not subsist in ... means of payment".^{[1999-2006 Art.5]}

However, Liechtenstein generally emulates Swiss law, and Liechtenstein's Copyright Act is based on the Swiss text. The majority of Swiss copyright law commentaries does not consider stamps "means of payment".^[1]^[2]^[3]^[4]^[5]^[6]^[7]^[8]It is therefore likely that Liechtenstein stamps are protected by copyright as well.

In the past, {{PD-Liechtenstein}} was used for uploads of stamps from Liechtenstein, but this should not be done in the future, unless it's possible to produce evidence for the public domain claim.
