Category:Steinmetzhaus (Himmelpforten)

English: The Steinmetz-Haus (formerly called Amtshaus; i.e. bailiff's house), built 1728/1729 by the Himmelpforten bailiwick (Amt Himmelpforten) as administrative headquarters. After the Himmelpforten bailiwick had merged in the new Stade district (Kreis Stade) in 1885 the building was bought in 1891 by Hermann Christian Ludwig Steinmetz (1831-1903), general superintendent of the Bremen-Verden General Diocese (1886-1903) of the Church of Hanover. Steinmetz founded in the building a Rettungshaus (i.e. rescue house, an educational and benevolent institution for neglected children), from 1892 to 1943 run by the Inner Mission. From 1947 on the house served as retirement home, as of 2016 the Steinmetzhaus is evacuated since the edifice does not meet modern fire protection regulations.
