Etymologically the name of the monastery is unclear, according to some local informants it might come from བཏེག་བྱ bteg-bya, “to lift”, or from ཐེབས་བྱ thebs-bya, “to reach / to extend”. (An Archaeological Account of the Markha Valley, Ladakh. By Quentin Devers and Martin Vernier, note 25 page 78)
