Tràigh a' Mhachaire, "Beach of the Machair (dune terrain)," also known as The Big Strand, and less accurately Kintra Beach, is an approximately seven-mile beach on the coastline of Laggan Bay, from the mouth of the River Laggan in the north to the mouth of the Kintra River in the south. Also less accurate is the application Cruach Mhòr, "big heap," as the Gaelic for Big Strand. The name is known in both Scottish and Irish Gaelic, in Ireland being a mountain. Strictly speaking in this context it means "big dune," where English dune is not to be confused with Gaelic dun, "hill fort," and refers to the machair behind the beach to the west of the straight, controled portion of the Duich River, north of the airport.
