Excise Tax Assessment Lists were divided between tax payers who resided in each district and those who owned property in the district but resided elsewhere. Each list gives name of collection district, name of state, and city or town, name of assessor and assistant assessor, month and year of assessment, tax payer's name, location or post office address, article or occupation, number in abstract, quantity or valuation, rate of tax, amount of tax upon particular article, total, and line number.

These lists are also divided into annual, monthly, and special lists. Entries in the annual and monthly lists are for those specific time periods listed while the special lists supplement the others including taxes that were labeled special by the assessor.
