Ukiyo Matabei 浮世又平 in kabuki is the artist who was the originator of Ōtsu-e 大津絵 and whose powerful brush strokes allowed his drawings to come to life and allowed him to write through stone. The role is based of the life and legends of Iwasa Matabei 岩佐又兵衛 (1578-1650).
