While frequently referred to as "mailboxes" (also "mail boxes"), the United States Postal Service (USPS) maintains storages boxes that aid in postal operations, but are not for use by the public. Also referred to mailboxes, the USPS has post boxes (which are for are for collecting incoming mail) and letter boxes (which are for delivering outgoing mail)--the "incoming" and "outgoing" are opposite for postal customers. USPS's storage boxes are usually similar in size and shape to the standard post boxes, but do not have any access to deposit mail. The USPS's storage boxes often green, so as not to be confused at a distance with its blue post boxes.
