The Westland Explorers’ Monument was first erected in 1868 in Weld Street, Hokitika, where the town clock now stands. It was later relocated to the Hokitika Cemetery in Seaview. On its four faces it memorialises "Henry Whitecombe [sic], Road Surveyor, drowned in Teramakua [sic] River, May 6th, 1863; Charlton Howitt, Explorer, drowned in Lake Brunner, September (actually June), 1863; Charles Townsend, Government Agent, drowned at Greymouth, October 9th, 1863; George Dobson, Road Engineer, murdered on the Grey and Arnold road, May 28th, 1866"
