Susan P. Casteras, "Abastenia St. Leger Eberle's 'White Slave'". Woman's Art Journal, Spring - Summer, 1986, Vol. 7, No. 1, pp. 32-36. Stable URL
- Excerpt:
It was in Westport that a plaster cast of the small statue turned up several years ago, in the possession of a sculptor and antique dealer. He restored the broken fragments of the sculpture, deliberately not adding the missing fingers or thumb from the auctioneer's hand. Intending to issue a limited edition of 30 bronze castings of White Slave through his Art Treasures Investment Corporation, he placed an advertisement to that effect in the June 1978 Connoisseur. There was limited response, however, and only two bronzes were cast. (Originally, White Slave and Girls Wading were probably exhibited in plaster at the Armory Show. The catalogue lists for sale a bronze version of White Slave, although whether one was made at the time is not known. While the 1970s casting methods may have been somewhat irregular (purists reject works cast so long after a sculptor's death), the two bronzes are now the only known extant versions of the work. Unfortunately, the plaster cast was destroyed after the owner's death.
