According to the reference (Acoustic Guitar Magazine vol.19, Ritto Music Mook), Yamaha Paul Simon Models were crafted between 1974 and 2002, in total 14 models of prototypes were proposed. The type #10 through #15 were checked by Simon and returned to Yamaha, and one of type #08 or #09 was auctioned.

Sound boards of all types are sitka spruce or German spruce.

#01 (1974) a Yamaha L-52, white pickguard, maple side & back.

#02 (1982) the first of Simon's own design, based on a downsized shape of Yamaha CJ-52 but modified by Simon, (this guitar was originally fitted with a white pickguard but later changed to black at Simon's request), maple side & back. The first type #02 has a special-shape bridge.
Since the second type #02 #02-2, bridge was changed to normal belly type. The second type #02 has no onboard electronics.

#03 (1982) a reproduction of type #02-2 but with onboard electronics.

#04 (1988) since this type, the colors of inside of body and pegs have been changed to black, and also the shape of position markers have been changed.

#05

#06, #07 (1990) only on this type, several minor changes were applied temporary; the position markers were dots, the abalone trims around the body and the headstock inlay were omitted, and the shape of headstock was changed.
