Category talk:Farmhouses by country
Latest comment: 16 years ago by Ulamm in topic Move request to Category:Farms by country
Almost all photos in all subcategories of "Farms by country" and "Farmhouses by country" show farmhouses or barns. So I took them together. The existence of twin categories caused desinformation. --Ulamm 16:05, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
Move request to Category:Farms by country
edit- Oppose a farmhouse and a farm are obviously two different notions, so Category:Farmhouses by country cannot be a duplicate Category:Farms by country. The subject of a category is NEVER defined by its content, so arguments based on contents are irrelevant. --Juiced lemon 01:30, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose - As far as I can see, "Farmhouses in" should be a subcategory of "Farms in", where "Farms" can hold all those things to do with farms, but not necessarily are a "house" (ie stables, piles of hay, fields, cows in sheds etc.). Deadstar (msg) 09:02, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose – For the other aspects of farms and farming there are the Category:Agriculture by country-categories. To my opinion it is better to have some pictures in both "Category:Agriculture in Xland" and "Category:Farmhouses in Xland", than to have three such categories for each contry ("Farms in …" and "Agriculture in …" and "Farmhouses in …"), which are crossing, too.--Ulamm 11:37, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
- Comment I do believe that a category called "Farms" would be useful. Perhaps there is overlap, but in my mind I can clearly make the distinction about what I would qualify as "agriculture" and what I would qualify as "farms".
- Agriculture": Tractors and other machinery, crops, graphs on production of crops, old machinery that's available in particular countries only, freshly plowed fields, potato gathering etc.
- "Farms": Stables, outhouses, farmhouses + sheds, pigfarms, free roaming chickens, ruined farmbuildings etc.
- "Farmhouses": narrow cat solely for the house the farmer lives in. Not only old, but also modern ones. Also for converted farmbuildings perhaps.

- Yes. A “farmhouse” is only a building, which does not imply agricultural activities. When you see a windmill, you don't think it can mill cereals. --Juiced lemon 10:15, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

- The problem is the ambiguity of "farms". It prevents uploaders from precise categorizing. The more categories are offered, the more pictures have to be recategorized afterwords.
- Mills are a differnt category. We ought to write some navigation advices in the top of the categories.--Ulamm 23:31, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
- Comment "Farms" is a category open to further categorisation as you point out. I don't see why we perse should not have "farms". I think people will look for "Farms in", and not for "farmhouses" or "agriculture in" etc. in first instance. Further categorisation is always possible. Deadstar (msg) 17:23, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose "Farms" is a subcategory of "Agriculture", while "Farmhouses" is more on the architectural side. There are lots of former farmhouses in densely populated areas which are no longer in agricultural use; yet they are cultural heritage items. Jensens 18:44, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose per User:Deadstar Of course, farmhouses will always be a subcat of farms. Note that historical farms are always addressed/known as farms, even if only the farmhouse is left over. See Commons:Categories for discussion/Current requests/2007/11/Category:Farms by Country --Foroa 11:21, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
- Comment
- Of course, "farmhouses" as well as "Fram buildings" will always be a subcategories of either "agriculture" or "farms" and of "buildings", though some farmhouses have only a history of farming.
- The problem is, that category "farms" invites to subsume farm buildings AND machinery AND farmland.
- I think we must get uploaders to declare by thier categorization, if their photos show only one, or two, or all three of these kinds of things.--Ulamm 15:37, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose per Jensens. Seeing there is such wide consensus, the move request can be removed, but should it be removed before the content that needs to be recategorized is? --Inkwina 09:03, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
- Comment Hallo Inkwina, what items do you call "the content that needs to be recategorized"?--Ulamm 09:30, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
- Comment following Deadtstar above it is not clear whether FarmHouses and Farm Buildings are equivalent categories. Also some countries like Norway, have the two terms used interchangeably. Also the parent categories of each of the entries here depends on how Category:Farms by country deletion request goes. I was just asking ... should the "move request" be removed NOW or Later? what is the usual procedure?
