Ambiguous category edit

This category is ambiguous because there are two villages in North Wales called Llangelynin: Llangelynnin, Gwynedd and Llangelynnin, Conwy. At first glance the images in Category:Llangelynin are for the village in Gwynedd. However, we also have Category:Llangelynnin, Gwynedd and Category:Llangelynnin, Conwy.

Unfortunately the English Wikipedia articles do not line up with the Commons categories: we have w:en:Llangelynnin, Gwynedd and w:en:Llangelynnin - the unqualified Wikipedia article is for the village in Conwy, but the unqualified Commons category is for the village in Gwynedd. It is simpler in Welsh Wicipedia which has w:cy:Llangelynnin, Gwynedd and w:cy:Llangelynnin, Conwy.

I propose that we align the Commons categories with Welsh Wicipedia: move the images from Category:Llangelynin into Category:Llangelynnin, Gwynedd and Category:Llangelynnin, Conwy, as appropriate. I would like to delete Category:Llangelynin but we might need to keep it for any ambiguous images. Verbcatcher (talk) 02:20, 25 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Go ahead and move the content to the Gwynedd category. Once you have done that, the correct thing to do is convert this page to {{Disambiguation}}. Please also correct any incoming links to this page.--Nilfanion (talk) 08:55, 25 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Nilfanion: Thanks, I have now noticed that Category:Llangelynin is in Category:Communities in Gwynedd, and Category:Llangelynnin, Gwynedd says it "is a small village in the community of Llangelynin in Gwynedd, Wales", so one category is intended for the village and the other for the community including places outside the village. Is this a common arrangement for categories for Welsh community categories? Do we need two categories to maintain this distinction, and if so what should they be called? What do you suggest? @Verbcatcher: The reason this category was created was the false assumption that the community is Llangelynin, while the village is Llangelynnin. In fact, both the single-n and double-n spellings are used for both meanings; it just depends which source you look at.
In general, Commons makes no distinction between village and community and both are combined into a single category. However if you feel it would be of benefit to make the distinction, standard practice is to have the village at the base name and disambiguate the community from it.
So your options here are either: Have Category:Llangelynnin, Gwynedd for the community and the village, or have Category:Llangelynnin, Gwynedd for the village and Category:Llangelynnin, Gwynedd (community) for the community.--Nilfanion (talk) 07:15, 26 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Done, thanks for your advice. Verbcatcher (talk) 21:19, 26 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
