Discussion

Actually, that was a mistake a while ago that I regret making honestly. I'll go correct it.
As for the bot, the current category is a redirect and contains numerous files. I will be just moving them to the correct category, nothing else. Artix Kreiger (talk) 20:50, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
In retrospect, the categorization isn't wrong. It is still correct, just not meet com:OVERCAT. Also, question is still irrelevant to the bot task. Artix Kreiger (talk) 21:26, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the file: Where is the culture element for this image? Why is it correct to overcat? Sorry, this categorizing is just wrong.
Regarding BRFA: There's more to do than just moving a category. Anyway, Commons Delinker should move this amount of files anyway. Over 1 mill. files is way too much for AWB without adding more task to it, e.g. internationalisation, url fixing, date fixing, etc. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 04:27, 28 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The BRFA only stated that the category would be "cleared out" - not simply moved into another category. That's why I brought up your past categorization. I echo Hedwig's concerns, that file was improperly categorized on more than one level. You stated that it might "not meet com:OVERCAT", but that is the Commons policy for categorization. I think the task is better suited for CommonsDelinker which is already designed for this sort of task. In any case, I believe Catalot is limited to 200 pages at a time anyway. The scope of the bot will be just moving the files from the above mentioned Britian and Ireland category to the proper category. Commons delinker is a bit slow and it still has over 1million images in the category. I won't be using the bot to do anything else. Also, what do you recommend me to do? Artix Kreiger (talk) 01:52, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Will other categories also be checked, or are the files just moved from one cat to another? If the latter, why should this be done by cat-a-lot and not by an ordinary bot script? --Krd 15:11, 28 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I guess I will accept the fact that my effort will considered redundant. Oh well. Artix Kreiger (talk) 02:01, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This seems kind of pointless. No file is explicitly categorised in Category:Images from the Geograph British Isles project. They're just there because the {{Geograph}} and {{Also geograph}} templates used to apply that category. Now that the templates have been updated, the files will migrate (at the latest) when they're next edited. HiW-Bot is currently editing all of these pages to update links to use HTTPS, and Geograph Update Bot will start editing them all to update co-ordinates as soon as its latest task is approved. It will probably be a few months before all of the files have been touched, but I don't see the need to go any faster. --bjh21 (talk) 12:16, 2 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sadly I cannot follow the discussion. Can somebody please summarize the current state, including the fact that the bot is currently blocked? --Krd 20:32, 8 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I can try, but I may not be entirely neutral.
{{Geograph}} and {{Also geograph}} were recently changed from categorising into Category:Images from the Geograph British Isles project (the "old category") to categorise into Category:Images from Geograph Britain and Ireland (the "new category") instead. Updates to categories applied by templates don't take effect immediately, though, so many files still appear to be in the old category. Artix Kreiger proposed a bot to "clear out" the old category, but their precise plans are unclear. This has led to some confusion. There seem to be three interpretations:
  1. Maybe Artix Kreiger plans to add other categories to each image, determined on a per-image basis. This interpretation led to questions about Artix Kreiger's past categorisation practices.
  2. Maybe Artix Kreiger plans to remove the old category from file and add the new one. This interpretation led to suggestions to use CommonsDelinker instead.
  3. Maybe Artix Kreiger plans to null-edit each file to force update of the link tables. This interpretation led to a suggestion to leave the job to HiW-Bot and Geograph Update Bot.
Given these alternative suggestions, I think Artix Kreiger may have abandoned this request.
The block on Artix Kreiger Bot is entirely separate and was imposed over a month ago because the account was apparently being used for bulk edits (using Cat-a-lot) without being a permitted bot account. --bjh21 (talk) 22:52, 8 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Im sorry but this won't work out. Consider this withdrawn. Artix Kreiger (talk) 21:04, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
