  • Helicon Focus often struggles with pre-processed raw images, particularly those that have been sharpened and denoised. Best to do only minor adjustments before the stacking (e.g. white balance, exposure matching) and apply the remaining edits to the stacked image
  • Helicon's parameters (method A/B/C, radius and smoothing) have a dramatic effect on quality. There's no sure recipe that applies to all kinds of images, so best to play around with the settings (the batch function is great for this, as you can leave the computer running a bunch of combinations overnight). Personally, I usually get the best results with methods B/C, radius < 5 and smoothing = 1 (these settings maximise sharpness often at the expense of halos and artificats, which need to be cleaned up afterwards)
  • The wavy path of the dust particles on the top right corner suggest a non-linear path of the focus rail. If you're using a manual rail this is usually due to backlash (slack caused by the manufacturing tolerance between the leadscrew and the carriage nut): to minimise it, never reverse the direction of the focus knob during the stack

  • Julesvernex2: thanks for your detail feedback. I go point by point: 1) I've never come to the idea of processing frames before merging them; 2) I'm aware of the difference in the outcome to you get playing around with those paramenters, thanks for sharing your preferences; 3) good point, I didn't see that. I don't usually go back and forth with the slide but it looks indeed strange. I shouldn't have this kind of issues in the future as I god a motorised slide now. Thank you.
