Colombia and Kenyan imagesEdit

Article(s): [[]]

Hi with the first image I need help with Why PNG? May be WB wrong, artifacts/sharpness. With the other images, I think they're very interesting. Can I please have help with categorisation, and description as I can't remember where they are in Kenya, also optimization as to which if any are quality. Thanks
Details of your request go here… --E.3 (talk) 01:25, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)

@E.3: Ok, it took me a while, to figure this out and I still don't know, what's the purpose with this photographs but I did some adjustment to them anyhow. I added descriptions and categories, cropped the first one and did some work on the paintings, especially sharpening, color contrast and reflexion removing. The first one is from Chicamocha National Park in Colombia other ones are from a Portuguese Wall painting in Mombasa. There are a few of them on Commons like they are summed up in Category:Murals in Kenya now. I really hope those are youre pictures, cause I found some quite similar ones on the internet (like this one). If so it, of course, still may be that you cannot remember where you took them.

The commentary on the first picture for me looks like pointless loathing for its own sake. I neither see remarkable artifacts of compression nor is there a necessity to have this file a JPG. The colors fit to the mood of the image and even the slightly grainy structure supports it. For me, this would be a Quality image without thinking too long about it. However I cropped it a bit und uploaded it as JPG so a new version would make sense at all. I hope, that's it.--Der Angemeldete (talk) 21:28, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

Waldseemüller mapEdit

Article(s): en:Waldseemüller map and many more

Please stitch it together into a better composite image and make it look nice. The best copy of the map we have currently is at , but it is 29,700 × 16500 pixels, 72,106 KB, in jp2 format, in 12 pieces, and 4.6 GB uncompressed. The "Initial composite image" has much inconsistency. See also some history at en:Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Image workshop/Archive/Oct 2008#Waldseemuller map.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:24, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)

Comment would this actually be useful? The individual strokes can already be seen on File:Waldseemuller map.jpg, so making it higher res is unlikely provide any additional, useful detail.--BevinKacon (talk) 12:11, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

@BevinKacon: Yes, the patchwork on File:Waldseemuller map.jpg is jarring. See also en:Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Waldseemüller map.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:14, 6 February 2019 (UTC)

Comment@Jeff G.: Done sort of roughly but should be much better than what you were experiencing. Mostly its the middle bit at the bottom. A true recreation of the map with all stitched together is weeks of work for this, sorry, at least a full week I thought. For some reason it gives me the error for section 3 "This file did not pass file verification" twice now though the file opens fine. Anyways, Hugin is a flat tyre on this. An idea might be to install a second GIMP in another folder, then open a pair of images and work on the edges. I will leave it for later but it's all good practice. Category:Waldseemuller map projects ~ R.T.G 00:33, 8 February 2019 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: Uploaded a slightly better matched and better patched version on the same file. I could probably ever so slightly better without restoring the whole thing but the difference between these two pictures was almost two hours so I might paint the edges a bit at some stage but otherwise I'll leave it to anyone else.. What you really need is a pro from a busy business oriented print shop who might have the technique and tools in hand or an academic of the same. GLuck o/ ~ R.T.G 11:51, 8 February 2019 (UTC)

@RTG: Thanks.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:12, 8 February 2019 (UTC)
I can't for the life of me figure out how I got this resolution. I made the map on top of one of the smaller stitched maps. I tried going back to resize and paste on, but it requires my computer to juggle something like a gygabyte of memory owing to the 70mb+20mb files, and it starts to freeze and is unworkable.. Poor Jeff has been after this map for ten years... ~ R.T.G 12:36, 9 February 2019 (UTC)
@RTG: To be fair, I just became aware of it this year due to this edit. Other Commoners and Wikipedians have been after it for ten years.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:07, 9 February 2019 (UTC)
Ah, I might figure it out it's not an expert job just awkward, if I measure the border and adjust it so the map drops right in the middle lol o/ ~ R.T.G 03:42, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

I commented there - and I urge anyone else reading this who thinks that the poor, blurry png thumbnails currently served by Mediawiki are an issue well overdue for 'fixing' to also add their thoughts. -- Begoon 08:26, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
Ah well - a plan to address this was kinda arrived at there, but then it all went quiet... again.... Perhaps I'm wrong and nobody really cares that much about this. Shame, if so. -- Begoon 13:47, 10 March 2019 (UTC)

  • Remarkably great! It's not like this made any effort. I'm definitely eager for wasting my time ungrudgingly on any further sockpuppet cropping up here -.- --Der Angemeldete (talk) 15:37, 8 March 2019 (UTC)
  • Well the time isn't completely wasted - it's another version/option that can be used which we didn't have before. The original image is used at and wikidata. You could ask them which version they prefer, I guess. Or PawełMM and yourself could come to an amicable agreement about which one to use, and be bold. I do sympathise though - it's never nice when you feel your effort has been wasted this way. You're not alone in that. -- Begoon 16:41, 8 March 2019 (UTC)
  • Your right, I got myself back but it stays an annoying fact since Pawel did some work for unrelialble Users too. Wasn't even one of the last ones a copyvio' that that got deleted after he improved it? A tool that provides doing futile work by marking potential fake accounts or trolls would be very helpful at this point. Are you okay with it, @PawełMM:, when I use my current version in the article at pl.wikipedia and your version stays for wikidata?--Der Angemeldete (talk) 16:11, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

@DS Why don't you use the Flickr version? They cite source and publication, the picture is high-res and there's no dumb copyfraud-sign on it. I uploaded it for you here with some editing done to it.--Der Angemeldete (talk) 23:27, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
@DragonflySixtyseven, Der Angemeldete, PawełMM: Why not work of the original LOC image that has no watermark and they even have a 56Mb tiff file for a much higher resolution image. Ww2censor (talk) 00:48, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
Because when I rummaged around for extra cartoons by Dorgan, Google pointed me towards the version of that image on Getty. DS (talk) 01:06, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
@DragonflySixtyseven, Ww2censor:However, here's the tif version too. But it look's blurry in the thumbnail.--Der Angemeldete (talk) 02:42, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
