Watermark removalEdit

Article(s): Lots are used

Can someone remove the watermark from all Category:Files from The Bui Brothers Flickr stream ? They are extremely annoying. Thanks.--Sinistrial (talk) 18:50, 12 November 2016 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)

This is not a realistic request, due to the large number of images. If you want to go through the images and add the {{watermark}} template to the images with a watermark, that will add the images to the "Images with watermarks" maintenance category. If you want to make a request for a specific image you need for a article you're working on then you can make your request (ideally should be 1-3 images), but asking us to go through 300+ images, find the ones with watermarks and edit them all is not a realistic request. I clicked through a number of the images and many aren't being used in articles. Please limit your request to images that are for use in a article or needed for a project/project tasks, etc. Offnfopt(talk) 10:05, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Chinese Exclusion ActEdit

Article(s): Chinese Exclusion Act (en), Loi d'exclusion des Chinois (fr)...

Hello. We have a cropped and poor quality version of a political cartoon. Nevertheless, the original is available at the Library of Congress. I could import it as is, but maybe a graphic designer could restore it a bit? (the picture looks very dark). Okki (talk) 05:57, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)
  •   Comment @Okki: What's wrong with just uploading one of the high resolution jpg versions, such as, that looks like it does not need any work. There is an even bigger 150Mb tiff version from which you can create a very high quality (6232 × 8425 pixels) jpg. Ww2censor (talk) 10:28, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
I had the impression that we could do a better job (on colors, visible craquelure right in the middle...). Okki (talk) 10:47, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
What does better job really mean? Should it not be more accurate colourwise instead of exaggerated, in which case perhaps one should start out with one of the images that were photographed with colour patches and a grayscale: Ww2censor (talk) 12:54, 10 December 2016 (UTC)

Kenner LibraryEdit

Article(s): en:Kenner, Louisiana

Is anyone interested in correcting the tilt in this image? It's not mine but I think a correction would be appreciated! --WhisperToMe (talk) 14:18, 11 December 2016 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)

Comment: essentially what you are referring to is an optical illusion. The photo is taken at an angle to the road and building, so you get the impression the building is tilted but it is not. Look at the trees and the perpendicular parts on the left of the building and you see they are vertical though perhaps there a very slight tilt showing on the left side, maybe it is a half degree off. Personally I would not bother. Ww2censor (talk) 14:32, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

Aha, I see. If it's not actually tilted then no change needed! WhisperToMe (talk) 14:57, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

Done If optical illusions are something which should not be edited, then please revert back to the original photograph. Edit: Okay, i found out that perspectives can be changed in wikimedia images. — ThiruN (talk) 10:07, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

Please remove the white stuff next to his right ear (on our left). People are reasonably objecting that it seems he's blowing smoke out of his ear. Thanks.Anythingyouwant (talk) 16:28, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)
Please do not. We can't alter something that is constructively part of an actual photograph. It's not a dust spot; it's text on the background behind the subject.- MrX 17:05, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
Seems like illegible text to me. Where is the rule requiring preservation of clutter?Anythingyouwant (talk) 17:08, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
Do you really need a rule to tell you that it's a bad idea to alter a photo that is being used in a historic BLP, other than removing dust, scratches, and minor blemishes? - MrX 17:30, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
It's a few letters of illegibly blurred text from some generic backdrop. The old version will still be in the history if it's required. -mattbuck (Talk) 18:10, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi y'all, I haven't been around in awhile but thought I'd check in and see how the Lab's getting along and 'weigh in' a bit. ... There's plenty of precedent for removing unwanted background elements in general and for cropping and adding neutral backgrounds to portraits; in fact 'removal of objects' is presented as an exemplary function of the Lab under 'Types of work done'. The orthodox way to go about such would be to upload the altered image under a new filename rather than overwriting the original file—as per the Commons:Overwriting existing files guidelines—while noting on the resultant file page that the image has been digitally altered and linking the original file (Template:Retouched picture, Template:Derived from, Template:Derivative versions). --Kevjonesin (talk) 09:35, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Note: I came across some likely relevant details ... Item #1 at Talk:Donald_Trump#Current_consensuses_and_RfCs seems to strongly imply that any significant change to the present image may be considered controversial under the terms of COM:OVERWRITE at this time (and might even take on the appearance of an 'end run' around the consensus there). Anythingyouwant did you in fact end up topic banned from that article (and if so, are you still)? Regardless, if you'd still like an alternate image made without the 'smoking ear' effect I'm willing to fire up GIMP and make it happen, but if you're intention is to offer it as an option at en:Donald Trump please consider that it'll likely soon be superseded by some official White House portrait and hence may not be worth the effort. --Kevjonesin (talk) 21:06, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I was briefly topic banned for a couple of weeks prior to the election in November. Water under the bridge. Thanks for considering this matter.Anythingyouwant (talk) 01:35, 19 January 2017 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s)
@ArildV: I assume you are exporting the file from a raw through Photoshop. Try exporting it with no noise removal in the sky, or if that's not enough, with a tiny bit of noise added to the sky and with highest jpeg quality. Noise or dithering are the way to go to prevent banding if the information is actually present in the original (as it should be here).

That median filtering was a tad too destructive here, don't you think? The eyes, hair and collar are needlessly affected from the median filter. Median filtering is definitely good here, but I recommend applying it only selectively. What I usually do in cases like this is put a copy of the non-filtered image on top of the filtered one and use the eraser on the spots that need cleaning. Make sure the top image has an alpha channel first, though, otherwise it won't work. I also recommend checking out the "repair" section of tools in G'MIC, especially the "remove hot pixels" one, if you happen to not have used them before, they're great. —Quibik (talk) 17:27, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

The sequence of pictures should be like the indicated at the first image of the article and at the Galeria (1):

Central image.

The pictures are the following: Central (indicated in blue): File:Quentin Metsys - Virgem das Dores.jpg

Side images from top left, down, to top right:
