Wikimedia Commons Logo edit

Does anyone know where the logo originated? I saw it somewhere else and would like to know what culture it's from. Thanks!

St. Edward's Crown Replacement? edit

At the moment all images with a reference to St. Edward's Crown show the following image:

However this image is of a poor quality considering it is on over 300 pages of the wikimedia project. I recently made a high quality vector image of the St. Edward's Crown which I believe is much better

My SVG won't display properly edit

I have recently uploaded Image:Carbon monoxide 2D.svg to the Commons, an SVG that I made in Inkscape in order to replace Image:Carbon-monoxide-2D-dimensions.png. However, Image:Carbon monoxide 2D.svg does not display correctly on its image page, although it does look fine when you click on it.

It works as intended in Inkscape; with the Adobe viewer in Explorer the red text is missing; the same in Opera which also uses a different font for the black characters, while in Firefox it looks like the Commons page with the nasty red block. The only thing I can observe is that text often seems to be more trouble than it's worth in trying to get it to display consistently in the Wikimedia SVG renderer. AnonMoos 15:40, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually (unless things have changed recently), Wikimedia can render certain cases of files with embedded bitmaps (though the intended use of such bitmaps is for small fixups, not as the main content of the image). Image clash with wikipedia edit

Image:Victorian House.jpg

Hey all, I have an issue with an image I uploaded (Image:Victorian House.jpg) clashes with an image named the same on Wikipedia. Is there some way I can have my image renamed to Image:Hamilton Victorian House.jpg, so it does not clash?

Just upload again the image with the new name and tag the first image with the template {{Bad name}}. Also add an extra note explaining what happened. Note that you have to rename the link on every projects where your image is referenced. -- AnyFile 21:20, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Elements of circle-sr.svg edit

Hello. I made an image which should represent all elements of circle, and I crossed over problems with its view once it was posted. The image has been made in InkScape (0.45.1), and the problem is that some elements that are being shown in the inkcsape interface (such as arrow, text that follows a path) not visible on the image when I upload it. I thought first it was a bug with MW, so I tried purging or positing under new name but nothing helped so far. I guess it is sort of incompatibility of I-don't-know-what, but I don't see any way to convert everything to curves (which would probably solve the problem) nor I have another idea how to solve this. Most of these issues can be resolved by saving the document in plain SVG format instead in Inkscape's.

Eggs from old encyclopaedia edit

I scanned and uploaded this illustration of eggs from an old Larousse encyclopaedia. I have not processed the image except to reduce the size of it. Unfortunately the left and right edges are blurred. Has anyone got any advice what should be done to improve it? Or is this already documented somewhere? ODG and SVG and software edit

I've been starting to draw diagrams with OO Draw, and then uploading to commons. I then discovered I could upload .png (and .svg) but not .odg. It has been suggested I should instead use .svg. OO Draw can export to svg but it can't import svg (yet). So I installed Inkscape. It seems it cannot open .odg. So, would I have to convert my .odg diagrams to .svg, and then open in Inkscape? This seems a bit odd - I had thought .odg would be safe and easily usable / transportable. Appreciate any advice. -- Jtneill - Talk 11:52, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ODG is the native file format mainly used by one particular software program (even if open source), while SVG is a widely-interoperable file format supported by a large number of programs. If you feel most comfortable editing within en:OpenOffice.org Draw, then I don't see why you have to use Inkscape at all -- save the file in ODG until you're satisfied with it, then export to SVG and upload the SVG. SVG text alignment edit

In an image I recently uploaded, Image:Roadmap to Unicode BMP.svg, the number in each colored box should be centered. The numbers are centered when I view the SVG with Inkscape or Firefox, but they aren't in MediaWiki's PNG rendering. Anyone know how I can fix this? —Saric 20:15, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I managed to fix it. The problem turned out to be that SVG.pm, the Perl module I used to generate the images, was adding an extra space character to each text element. —Saric 22:44, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Upload SVG problem edit

I tried to upload sight_symbol_black.svg (at my personal site), but see a error message «The file is corrupt or has an incorrect extension. Please check the file and upload again.» What's wrong? -- Sergey kudryavtsev 09:39, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the standalone="yes" was definitely wrong for one thing, and it didn't load into InkScape. I twiddled a few minor things, and it uploaded: Image:Sight symbol black.svg. Add what license tag you want, or request deletion... AnonMoos 13:53, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. But really was there another error. Accidentally in the file was a cyrillic letter "А" in 1251 code page. But a default coding for XML (as well as for SVG) is UTF-8.
