  •   Info Ok then, let's try this one instead from the next day and a slightly different angle where the braches are not so prominent. Getting the sun and a good visible moon in the same image isn't that easy up here in the north, unless you have an eclipse or a very wide panorama. However, if you are lucky to get a waxing moon close to the winter solstice, they are only about 90° apart. All by me, -- Cart (talk) 21:57, 16 December 2018 (UTC)

  • Ok, thanks for the feedback. I hesitated with this close-up at sunset. That was my first photo in the evening before I come back early morning the next day before sunrise to take the 4 other ones, including this shot. If more opinions join your feeling, I may nominate the alternative instead, and maybe come back again to the spot for another full view with a more special sky (without guarantee). But here I like the stump well isolated and the deserted horizon, except the 2 palm trees inside. I will be grateful for more opinions. •   Comment - Good portrait. I'm not seeing what the size of the print was. Do you know? -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:22, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
    • @Ikan Kekek: I'd guess about 4-7" wide - a bit smaller as cropped - but that's just a guess from the text on the original. Much smaller than that and the smaller text becomes ridiculously small, and much bigger and the big text is ridiculously big. Probably on the larger end, given the amount of detail. •   Oppose The bottom half of this image appears to have been doctored - judging from the similar one on the Britannica website. Charles (talk) 11:08, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
    • It's a 1900-1920s thing. It was considered artistic to fade out. Sarcasm I can't quite resist: You probably didn't need to point to the Brittania image: She had a lower half, you know. She wasn't noted for disappearing at the waist. But seriously, it's just how images at this period were presented. You can sometimes find ones that aren't like that, but, really, it's no different than an oval frame or a crop. Note the photographer's mark on it. Adam Cuerden (talk) 13:53, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
    • @Charlesjsharp: Having researched a bit, it looks like the one on the Brittania site DID do that as well, just a bit lower down, and they cropped it. See http://www.icollector.com/Ida-M-Tarbell_i14233542 Adam Cuerden (talk) 14:54, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
  • This should have photographer's mark then? Same sitting. Charles (talk) 14:58, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
  • @Charlesjsharp: It does. It's kind of hard to see. Look in the lower left, maybe 1/3rd of the way across the image. It's white on light grey. It'd probably be more visible on the physical copy, due to three-dimensionality? Not sure. All this photographic company's logos are white, though, from what I've seen (Category:James E. Purdy) so that's not that odd. Adam Cuerden (talk) 15:55, 16 December 2018 (UTC)

  •   Support because this is the only way you can have a lot of artifacts in the picture and still have a credible nomination.   Although I do think Basile has a point that a slightly higher angle of the sun would give you even better texture. Daniel Case (talk) 03:39, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
  •   Support - It's a very interesting assemblage of objects, it's interesting to move my eyes around them, and sometimes, you just have to take the opportunity to get a shot that won't present itself in any other kind of light. This is a photograph of found objects, opportunistically shot in situ. Anyway, I disagree that the light on the grass spoils anything. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:05, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
  •   weak Hmmm, doesn't really work for me, sorry. On the one side, there's the lighting (per Basile Morin). On the other, I'd generally prefer a way more radical approach, i.e. an image concentrating on selected, abstract details (cf. note, but please don't crop). Any chance you can retake the pic? --Martin Falbisoner (talk) 06:28, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
  • Sorry, Ikan is right that this was an opportunistic photo. This was during the road works here and the pile was there one day and gone the next. I like having the whole pile in the shot with all the shapes it presents. The low raking light helps enhance the outlines of the covers, I'm not that sure a higher angle of the sun would have made the pile this interesting. I also like the contrast between the fresh sunlit spring grass and the old tired darker rusty object. --Cart (talk) 08:50, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

  •   Oppose Per Adam and because it's been overprocessed (haloes along high-contrast edges due to oversharpening). --El Grafo (talk) 10:48, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
    •   Comment I personally feel that this kind of "colourless" scene fits the subject much better, as it makes it look a little ominous. The technical quality is imo adequate, the resolution is over double of the required 2 MP. --Msaynevirta (talk) 10:50, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
  •   Comment - This is FPC, not QIC. We're looking for a lot more than "adequate" here. I'm not voting yet, but I'll say that I agree on "colorlessness" but the photo is very small for FPC in 2018 and the technical quality is not overwhelming. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:15, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

  •   Delist -- Pbroks13 (talk) 16:56, 12 December 2018 (UTC)
  •   Question Could you be more specific as to why it does not meet those standards? Daniel Case (talk) 19:43, 12 December 2018 (UTC)
    • Yes, I should clarify. It fails all four categories for non-photographic media. It is not notable in its own right, and it is not of high artistic, historical, or illustrative merit. In regards to the quality of the illustration, the most glaring issue is the lion. The line-work is shoddy, and gives no depth; contrast that to the depth of the penguin. The grass is also very poorly done. Compare this coat of arms FP to others in the same category, and it is very apparent that this one is leagues below the others. I believe this was promoted at a time when standards for FP were lower (2007), and does not meet the standard that FP should be held to today. Pbroks13 (talk) 20:03, 12 December 2018 (UTC)

Comment The dark in not a shadow but the center line on the bottom of the swimming lane. The red reflection comes from a canopy above the starting blocks which provides shadow for the time keepers and other officials, visible because of the low angle to the surface of the water. The low position of camera imo was necessary to isolate the head from the background. --Isiwal (talk) 17:34, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

  •   Support - I think I said I liked it but that I would expect people here to object to the "harsh light and shadows". I support, because at 300% of my laptop screen, only the clump of flowers in the foreground really makes me think twice about the strength of the light, but I think that as a strategy for passing FPC, you would do well to take Daniel's advice. •   Oppose The light is great, the colors wonderful, unfortunately a main element bothering me at first sight is the chain-link fence in the background, immediately identifiable despite the blur. The bird seems enclosed, even if it's just an impression, it's enough to break the feeling of freedom a flying animal naturally evokes. But much more distracting than this is the low depth of field. F/2,8 at 200 mm is far too low. Only the eyes are in focus, the beak is completely blurry. It was developed by Great Britain, Spain, France, and Italy (and sold to Germany and Poland) [1] in order to replace the outdated Bald Eagles of Freedom they imported from the US 40 Years ago. It was a prestige project that took longer than expected, but now the first couple has been deployed for active duty. SCNR :-P
But seriously, somehow I like the pattern in the background. And although I'd like a little bit more DOF, the beak is not an issue for me. Also, please don't cut it, every close crop I tried ended up being too crammed.--El Grafo (talk) 08:23, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

  •   Comment Saturation dialled down. Image taken at f/8 at 1/200 sec, so sharpest setting of the lens with very low chance of body movement during the shot. However kit lens may have a limitation on absolute sharpness achievable at the sides/corners. However did some local sharpening adjustments. Hope it addresses the sharpness in the field issue - Subhrajyoti07 talk 02:42, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
  •   Support Improved. But f/8 "the sharpest" setting works at the focus area only. At f/11 or f/13 obviously you get more depth, thus more details over the surface of such landscape -- Basile Morin (talk) 11:15, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
