The Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed (RCE) is the Dutch cultural heritage organisation for the protection and conservation of the Dutch National Heritage Sites (Rijksmonumenten). The RCE has a collection of 555.000 images (september 2012), all made by their own employees. Most of these images are released under the cc-by-sa-3.0-nl license (originally up to a 1200px size). A large part of the images (465.000) have been uploaded to Commons.

Collection

The database consists out of more than 555.000 images, the main part of the images is from Rijksmonuments or buildings from the Monument inventorisation project (MIP). But besides the Rijksmonuments there is a big batch of images from other cultural heritage (mainly buildings). Also there are 2.500 images from outside the Netherlands (Suriname, Belgium, Ghana, Germany and 22 other countries). The photographs were taken throughout the last century all around the Netherlands. Most of the images are made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 NL license.

The images are tagged with {{RCE-license}} and can be found here on Commons in the category Images from the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed.

Upload

Most of the images have been uploaded by a bot, see Commons:Batch uploading/Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed for technical information. The collection seems to be ordered by location by alphabet so the images have been uploaded in that order to Wikimedia Commons. The upload was temporarily not continued after 5000 images uploaded earlier were deleted in 2014, but taken up again in 2016 with the upload of the Temminck Groll Collection (photographs from Africa, Asia and South America).

Possible Rijksmonument

Images for which the RCE has a Rijksmonument identifier are tagged with {{Rijksmonument}}. All other images are tagged with {{Possible Rijksmonument}} putting them in one of the subcategories of Category:Possible Rijksmonumenten. You can help by figuring out if the image is of a Rijksmonument or not. For that the template contains two links to the Monuments database

1. Link to the monuments database with exact address and location: Due to different notations or addresses you might not find the Rijksmonument
2. Link to all Rijksmonumenten in a location: This only works for small villages which don't have too many Rijksmonumenten

This might help to find it, but won't find you every Rijksmonument. When you're sure something is a Rijksmonument (or not) you have two links:

1. Yes: It's a Rijksmonument and you know the id. You'll get a popup asking for the id. This will replace the {{Possible Rijksmonument}} with {{Rijksmonument|<the id you entered>}} and adds Category:Rijksmonumenten. A bot runs on Category:Rijksmonumenten to categorize the images in it so you don't have to change it to a more specific category (but you can of course do it).
2. No: This will remove the {{Possible Rijksmonument}} template

Almost every image in the collection contains coordinates, unfortunately a lot of these coordinates are incorrect. The most obvious error is that a lot of images from around the Netherlands end up in the center of Amsterdam (which happens to contain the highest density of Rijksmonumenten in the Netherlands). It's not clear what's causing this. All the images that are within the box with this topleft corner and this bottomright corner that are not explicitly labeled as being in Amsterdam have their coordinates removed.

All other images that don't have such obviously wrong coordinates are tagged with {{Object location RCE}}. This is just a wrapper around {{Object location}} that puts the images in a tracker category. You can help by working on this category:

1. If the coordinates are correct, replace {{Object location RCE}} with {{Object location}}
2. If the coordinates are not correct, remove {{Object location RCE}} or replace it with {{Object location}} with the correct location

If the image is tagged with {{Rijksmonument}} and there is no location template on it, a bot will come along to add {{Object location}} based on information in the monuments database.

Categorization

All images are categorized by location at upload. If a Rijksmonument identifier is available, the bot will place the image in Category:Rijksmonumenten in <place> or, if the place is not available, Category:Rijksmonumenten in <province> (list of Rijksmonumenten categories). If no Rijksmonument identifier is available it's assumed it's not a Rijksmonument. The bot will place the image in Category:<place> or, if the place is not available, Category:<province>. This might flood some categories. These need to be sorted out by hand.

The source data is in Dutch. To get the right English category name {{Netherlands location Dutch}} is used. This template is also used to do disambiguation.

For most files the RCE provides one or more subjects. {{RCE-subject}} is used to convert this Dutch subject into a Commons category. A bot will regularly substitute this template. These categories might get crowded and need to be sorted out. Images from outside the Netherlands will get miscategorisations.

History

In April/May 2011 the RCE released its image collection on beeldbank.cultureelerfgoed.nl. In september 2012 the first uploads to Wikimedia Commons were made. In December 2012 a bot was started to mass upload images. This continued in the first part of 2013 when most images were uploaded.
