STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

edit

1. First, you have to create an account on Commons (entering your username and password). If the account already exists, don’t forget to log in.

🟥Important! Activate your e-mail address using your account preferences (so we can contact you later if you win).

2. Read the Guidelines: Before uploading your photo, carefully read the contest guidelines and rules. Pay attention to the eligibility criteria, copyright, image requirements, etc.

3. Find your country in the list of participating countries and click on the landing page of the local contest to follow the guide provided on the local page and to upload directly for the local WLE.

4. For example, WLE in Azerbaijan. On the landing page of the local contest, read the local timelines and rules. Then, find the tab “Upload”.

5. Then, click on “Select media files to share”, once you decide which images you are planning to submit and upload the file. You can upload a few images at once.

Continue with the next step.

6. Choose the copyright to allow free usage of the photos on Commons.

7. After, choose an understandable title in English or in your language. Then, add a short caption to the image and provide the full description (the more you write — the better!).

Write it in English (preferably), and provide the caption and description in your own language as well (optionally).

🟥Important! Please specify the exact and full name of the protected area and add the coordinates. If the animals or plants are shown in the picture, please identify the species in the caption or description.

8. Add the date of your work, categories, and the code of the natural site (optionally). It is preferable to specify the coordinates (in case your image will be on the international round of evaluation and will aim to win, we will contact you anyway by asking to add the coordinates).

9. If your image is suitable for our international special nomination, “Human Rights and Environment”, you can also submit it there, choosing “Yes” in the question (so, your image will be a part of this special nomination and you could win there as well). Read more about this nomination and its criteria here.

10. After finishing the main part, click on “Publish files”. Now, the image is available to check on the Wikimedia Commons, and you are a participant of Wiki Loves Earth 2024! You can find your files and all the uploaded images from other participants here.

ADDITIONALLY

edit
  • If you want to check all the uploads uploaded by you, go to the tab “Uploads” and find all the files that are available. You can click on the exact file to see the details.
  • If you want to make sure that your image is taking part in the Wiki Loves Earth competition, scroll down the image page, and you should see this sign:

If it doesn’t appear, click “Edit” at the top of the page:

Then, insert the WLE template into the text code using your country code at the end (see on the screenshot).

By adding this, your image is participating in the contest (but if you are uploading your image from the beginning through the WLE uploader, there is no need to insert this template, as it should appear automatically there).

In case of any questions, please contact the local organizers of your country (find the contact details on the landing page of the local contest) or email the international organizing team at wle-team wikimedia.org.ua

Thanks for your contribution to the Wiki Loves Earth and natural heritage worldwide!
