Welcome to the Wiki Loves Earth 2023 is an international photographic competition to promote natural heritage sites around the world through Wikimedia projects (mainly Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons), and this is the second edition in Zambia. Our natural heritage sites are invaluable treasures that need to be preserved for future generations. These sites are not only a testament to our planet's rich biodiversity but also serve as important cultural and historical landmarks. Therefore, it is imperative that we take steps to protect and promote these sites.

Through this competition, we hope to inspire photographers from around the world to capture the beauty of these natural heritage sites and contribute to the Wikimedia projects, which will make these images accessible to millions of people worldwide. We believe that this competition will not only showcase the stunning beauty of our natural heritage sites but also raise awareness about the urgent need to conserve them. We are thrilled to see the incredible talent that will be on display, and we cannot wait to see the photos that will be submitted. Thank you all for joining us on this exciting journey to promote and preserve natural heritage sites around the world through Wikimedia projects.

The contest will take place from 1 June 2024 to 31 July 2024

History edit

In 2022, Zambia participated in the global photography competition "Wiki Loves Earth," which is aimed at promoting natural heritage sites around the world through Wikimedia Commons. The competition received an impressive 217 entries from Zambian photographers, showcasing the country's rich and diverse natural resources.

The competition was open to anyone interested in photography, and participants were encouraged to upload their images to Wikimedia Commons, a media file repository that is freely licensed and allows for easy sharing and distribution of images. The Zambian entries included stunning images of the country's national parks, game reserves, waterfalls, and other natural wonders, highlighting the beauty and diversity of Zambia's natural heritage. The photographs captured the country's breathtaking landscapes, wildlife, and cultural heritage, showcasing the unique and precious natural resources of Zambia.

The competition was judged by a panel of experts, including renowned Zambian photographers and naturalists. The judges had a challenging time selecting the winners, as the quality of the entries was exceptional. The competition also helped raise awareness about the need to preserve Zambia's natural resources and the critical role that photography can play in promoting conservation and inspiring people to protect natural heritage sites. The success of the competition has inspired plans to make it an annual event, encouraging more Zambian photographers to participate and contribute to Wikimedia Commons, promoting Zambia's natural heritage to a global audience.
