Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2012/Meetings/2012-03-04

These are notes from a Skype meeting held between Lodewijk (Effeietsanders), Maarten (Multichill), Elke (Elya) and Tomasz (odder) on Sunday, 4 March 2012.

Topics discussed

edit

Technical issues

edit
  • We should create a custom Commonist-based application to make the mass upload for WLM easy.
    • Tomasz will write an e-mail on the mailing list asking people to create such a programme (AP).
  • OTRS:
    • We have an overview of the queues on Commons (written by Maarten & Tomasz);
    • Let's just wait another month to have a clear overview of the participating countries.
      • Tomasz will update the timeline with information on OTRS (AP) .
  • What about the hosting of the external international website?
    • Last year the server went down due to a huge amount of traffic;
    • Maybe the WMF could host it this year?
    • What are the other options?
      • Manuel Schneider and Wikimedia Switzerland?;
      • Wikimedia Labs?
        • Maarten will ask a question if Wikimedia Labs could help us (AP).
  • Elke has created a new WLM Wordpress theme for local teams, see her private website.

UploadWizard

edit
  • We need a contact on our side to facilitate and translate the requirements from human to techyspeak (will be taken care of by Elke);
    • There are already some bugs filled last year, available on this page as well as on Bugzilla;
    • Maarten shoud get Elke in touch with the Wikimedia Foundation developers for UploadWizard improvements (AP).
    • Elke is now our WMF tech contact ;-)

Mobile phone application

edit
  • We need a facilitator for contacts between the community and the Foundation (AP: Elke, again).
  • What would our requirements be for such an application?
    • Monuments nearby me — Raul Kern from Wikimedia Estonia implemented that via API last year;
    • Mobile upload with a WLM layer;
      • There is already a layer for Layar (available on iPhone, Android and Nokia devices)
      • Elya will test the application and write a blog post if it's OK (or make the author write a blog post about it), asking people to do some more test (AP).

Communication

edit
  • Lodewijk will discuss the possibility of working with the WMF on communication (contact: Matthew Roth);
  • We need to publish a summary of our work & post some e-mails to the mailing list to motivate people;
    • Tomasz and Lodewijk will take care of that, Maarten will do a peer review before publishing those (AP).
  • Tomasz will publish a who's who page on Wikimedia Commons with the information on who we are, what part of the organisation we are responsible for, etc (AP).
  • We need to have some standard text for the joining countries (published on Wikimedia Commons).
    • Include numbers with results from past editions;
    • Update the press page, ask chapters to do that.
      • Tomasz will create such a text (AP).

Participating countries

edit
  • Maarten has contacted Moka Pantages to help in organising WLM in the United States;
    • Sarah Stierch is very busy; she was the lead, but now the US need a new leader. There is plenty of people willing to form a team, they just need a captain!
    • Elke will contact Frank Schulenberg to see if he is willing to or knows someone else to take the lead (AP);
    • Moka is probably willing to work as a communication person, but maybe she's willing to be the new captain?
      • Maarten will contact Moka directly to see what exactly she is willing to do in the US (AP).
  • Elke had a Skype conversation with Moushira; she is willing to take on the north Africa lead.
    • She will bring in Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco. Egypt already has some lists (where?). She is going to visit Morocco at end of March. Would like to add Jordan, not sure if that works. Sounds very promising!
  • Elke will follow-up with Moushira (AP); what questions to ask her?
    • What language are the Egypt lists in? (Arabic?)
    • Could we get the lists in raw format just to have a look and them and advise the local team?
    • Could she sign up for the mailing list (she got an invite already)?
    • Let her familiarise herself with the timeline.
    • We might need a tech savvy Arab person (Diaa_abdelmoneim?), because it's hard to convert lists from a non-Latin alphabet without the knowledge of the language.
    • What about the lists in the other two countries (Tunisia and Morocco)?
    • Could we get some support from the WMF?

An overview

edit
  • Italy (Lodewijk):
    • There is already a group of 15 people, and they are really enthusiastic;
    • Lodewijk is giving a workshop in April!
  • India?
    • India is in a deadlock right now; Lodewijk will try to stir things up, but we will probably need to go there.
  • United States?
    • Already discussed above.
  • Ukraine, Belarus, Czech Republic
    • Tomasz will travel to Ukraine and the Czech Republic (Brno) on 24-25 March.
    • Belarus is still tricky due to visa requirements and political situation, but maybe Belarusians could travel to Kiev.
    • Financial options will be discussed later, maybe Wikimedia Poland could fund travel & accommodation for Tomasz.
  • Philippines:
    • Tomasz got in touch with Josh Lim (he's in Poland). Josh told that they will use external website that leads back to Commons.
    • We don't like all the extra rules published on the Philippines' page on Commons. Tomasz tried to convince them to drop or alter some of the rules.
      • Tomasz will discuss this further with Roel in the upcoming days (AP);
      • Lodewijk will write an e-mail to the mailing list about the rules of the contest (AP).
  • Bangladesh — Lodewijk will get in touch with Wikimedia Bangladesh (AP);
  • South Africa:
    • For the time being, just wait and see. There are some good people there (involved with WLM in the Netherlands in the past), check back in several weeks.

Meetings

edit
  • Chapters Meeting; Lodewijk and Tomasz will have question hours and will suggest people to make appointments.
    • Lodewijk will send an e-mail about this to internal-l.
    • Maarten and Elke will still need to be accepted for the meeting or at least part of it (AP Elke);
    • Please note that the German kick-off meeting in Dresden is scheduled for the very same weekend :-(
  • Western Germany face to face meeting in late April - let's discuss it if we do or do not meet in Berlin.
  • Hackathon (1-3 June); Elke won't be there.
    • It's not going to be a dedicated Wiki Loves Meeting like last year.
    • Maarten will probably do a Wiki Loves Monuments session.
    • We need to decide on the rules somewhere in April.
    • We need to do more workshops if we're not doing the meeting.
    • Maarten will send out an e-mail to the mailing list asking whether to have such a meeting on June 1-3 or not (action point).
  • Wikimania (the deadline is Sunday, 18 March 2012);
    • Lodewijk already has 3 submissions;
    • Maarten will fill a submission for a Wiki Loves Monuments presentation & panel (& party, if possible). Tomasz could join as a co-host.

Other issues

edit
  • The pros and cons of registering a trademark have been discussed; the deadline for opinions is somewhere in mid-March.
  • Maarten keeps contacting our partners.
