Using an extracted section of image rather than whole image

The aspect ratio of this featured image is rather extreme, so in setting up a POTD I've used an extract of the image rather than the full thing. This is accepted practice over at English Wikipedia; is it also accepted here? MartinPoulter (talk) 15:44, 28 September 2021 (UTC)

Not the highest quality version

I noticed the picture of the day 6 Oct was not the highest quality version of the image available on commons. See:

Today's picture of the day mislabeled

Hi, Contrary to the file name and caption, the subject of today's (October 17) picture of the day is a beech tree, not an oak. See discussion at WikiProject Plants. Regards, Tdslk (talk) 19:24, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

22nd June 2023

Hello! I need a Favour to add this image as picture of the day for 22nd June 2023. There is already one file submitted for the day, but it is a special day related to this image. The UNESCO site shown in this image was added to the list of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites on 22 June 2014. Meanwhile, I added this image on 21st June so, I need help to interchange nominations if possible. Snehrashmi (talk) 03:13, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

@Snehrashmi: I know it’s quite far in the future, but what about displaying it on 22nd June next year? Apart from avoiding the conflict, a 10-year anniversary is even more of an occasion than a 9-year one. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 22:49, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
Thank you @Tacsipacsi, Same thought here. I was also thinking for 22 June 2024. Would you help me to do it? because i am not aware about Potd/Motd nomination and i made some mistakes and then self-revert it. Snehrashmi (talk) 03:08, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons featured pictures of the day

Can anyone tell me why the picture of the day is so often from Central or eastern Europe? The images very frequently feature German, Ukrainian, or Russian subjects. And often some from bordering countries. Rashadtaylor109 (talk) 21:29, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

Yes, there is a lot of photos from Central Europe usually. Most of them are from Germany, big country with 80+ mln. population. Other countries from Central Europe are German-language countries, like Austria, Switzerland...What about Ukraine and Russia. Ukraine is a big country too. As for Russia it's largest country in the world by area, 2-3 times more than all Europe, with 140+ mln population, 105-110 is in european part. In June, July and August there are 2 photos per month for such large country like Russia. And 0 in May and 1 for April and 0 for September 2023. It's not a lot, I think. Featured POTD caption bug

I wrote this on the talk page for today's POTD as well, but there appears to be a bug regarding captions; on the POTD page, the image is Maestro Batik Tulis di Imogiri.jpg, but the caption is "Tengwar script by J. R. R. Tolkien." I checked the POTD RSS feed and the linked POTD for September 9, 2023 is indeed Tengwar alphabet.svg.

Template:Potd/2023-11-06

The picture PuckMagazine16May1906.jpg was by @PDMagazineCoverUploading already chosen for the Picture Of The Day for May 16. 2023. A picture can not been promoted for more days. See: Commons:Picture of the day/Instructions#Steps to add a picture, first point. Should be choose an other one for Template:Potd/2023-11-06. Thank you. -- ato (talk) 05:32, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

Image of the day repeated

The image has been selected as picture of the day on Wikimedia Commons for 6 November 2023, has already been selected as the Wikimedia Commons image of the day for 16 May 2023. Clarice Reis (talk) 19:47, 7 October 2023 (UTC)

Exactly. That is what I also wrote above. Should be chosen an other one. -- ato (talk) 08:22, 8 October 2023 (UTC)

The same case is Template:Potd/2023-12-21. The picture File:Nasir-al molk -1.jpg was earlier already selected here: Template:Potd/2018-09-23 -- ato (talk) 06:02, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

Image of the day stuck?

Whenever I open the image of day on the main page it shows the one from october 18 but I am writing this on october 20th. I don't know why this is happening. 165.199.181.15 16:27, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

I see the October 21 POTD on the Main Page right now, even when visiting it logged out. Maybe you’ve run into some caching issue? —Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:58, 21 October 2023 (UTC)

Interwiki transclusion

Hello! Is there an automatic way to have the picture of the day appear in another wikiproject? I was thinking of having a dedicated section about it at my homewiki (SqWiki) which would automatically show the POTD, whatever it may be, without me needing to update it. Any way to achieve that without using bots? - Klein Muçi (talk) 09:56, 22 October 2023 (UTC)

Other wikis cannot read Commons templates, but they can read tabular data. There are two options:
  • If you want to completely avoid using bots, you need to convince people to use tabular data instead of the currently used templates. You probably won’t succeed.
  • Get a Commons bot owner set up a bot that updates tabular data based on the existing templates. While it isn’t strictly a solution without using bots, it’s probably easier to find a willing bot owner on Commons than on Albanian Wikipedia (and not only Albanian Wikipedia benefits from it, any WMF wiki can make use of it).

Tacsipacsi, thank you! I'll try my chance at the VP. — Klein Muçi (talk) 15:43, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
