A. Strategy Track - Wiki Loves photography contests edit

What photography contests have you joined in so far? How can we attract more participants to the Wiki Loves photography contests? How can we engage the local contributors in conducting online/offline activities such as photo walks and adding photos on Wikipedia articles? What other local or national photography contests can we organize for 2024? What other important topics do contributors need to discuss? Filipinayzd (talk) 16:15, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Camera Pasa Pasa 7, Social media would attract a lot more participants to the Wiki Loves Photography contests, If people understood the significance of contributing to Wikipedia articles they would be more willing to contribute to the cause. maybe photography contests that are conducted asynchronously and divided into categories (nature, sports, street, culture and so on). I regularly join annual photo contest in the Philippines and international. Some of this I reached to being a finalist and some of this I made it into major awards. To name a few : 10 Photos to Shake the World; Fiba Photo Contest; HIPA Photo Contest (Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Awards; IPA Photo Contest (International Photography Awards); PTPC (Philippine Tourism Photography Competition), Annual Wiki Loves Photo Contests – Food, Earth, Monument and many others.
One way to attract more participants in the Wiki Loves Photo contest is to increase the prize money or if not monetarily, add freebies like camera gadgets -camera backpack, tripod and others. In order to do this we must have sponsors like Lightroom Corp the distributor of Benro products (bag and tripod), Lowepro (camera bag), and Tamron camera lenses. We can write a letter for them then set special meetings with the marketing head, to introduce to them the Annual Wiki Loves Photo Contests. For Wiki’s part the sponsors logo will be part of the layout of Photo contest poster, and also a tarp or backdrop showing the sponsors logo in the awarding of contestants. If the showing of sponsors logo in wiki’s social media materials is prohibited is not allowed, we must devise how can we give back to the sponsors for their marketing needs.
We encourage all the Phil Wiki community members specially to the amateur and professional photographers to atleast contribute a photo once a month shot on their travels or in their place about food, fashion, monument, nature. It doesn’t need to be their best photos (which are for the Wiki Loves Photo Contest) but any decent shot is ok. So atleast 10 photos a year including the contributions submitted in the Wiki Loves Photo Contest is enough.
For conducting local photowalks, there should be a photo contest with tokens given to the top 3 best Photos. I use the word token describing decent amount of prize money, not big. It can be 3k, 2k and 1k just to to reward their best conributions. Like in the annual international scott kelby photowalk we in Ilocos Sur give small tokens to the best 3 photos of the photowalk locally as an appreciation for their best work.
I’m thinking of Wiki loves Culture (or Wiki Loves Daily Life) photo contest, to showcase the way of life of the Filipino people, traditional livelihood, traits, arts, traditions and others. The photo contest submission starts on December and ends on January 15. And the announcement of winners will be in the first week of February. The contest mechanics is the same with the other Wiki Photo Contest just add that compositing and use of Ai to generate an image in the picture are strictly prohibited. Just indicate the possible subjects in their photo such as Filipino traits, Traditions, Traditional Livelihood to help them visualize their images because culture is broad subject. I have joined Wiki Loves Earth and Wiki Loves Food. I am not a professional photographer but I love taking pictures. I agree with @Jessartcam that we should encourage the PhilWiki members to contribute more pictures and utilize the pictures in editing Wikipedia articles. We can give tokens and incentives if they reach certain number of photos and articles. Also, we need to boost our branding by creating partnerships and having sponsors. With this, we can secure additional prizes and gain more participants. As for 2024, maybe we can organize a photo walk to the different regions in the Philippines and upload photos about culture and tradition. With this, we can encourage more people to join the contests and possibly create a charter or affiliate in the different regions. To do this, we may need to communicate with the Department of Tourism. Daragang Nagueña (talk) 10:52, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
What photography contests have you joined in so far? I have joined and participated some international photo contests like HIPA, Changing Asia, Huawei Next Image, etc. Locally, most festivals photo contests within VisMin area. I think more awareness on the Wiki Loves Photo Contests. I would assume that there are only a few who are familiar with it. Having local communities within VisMin area would be surely help boost the dissemination of the Wiki Loves Photography Contest agenda. I agree also with adding more surprises to the contests like special items and tokens. Herbertkikoy (talk) 06:02, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I've joined Wiki Loves Food and a few Tourism-related photography contests. Perhaps forming partnerships that can be mutually beneficial for both photographers and agencies/companies/organizations/etc. can encourage more people to participate in Wiki Loves photography contests. Agree with @Jessartcam on increasing the prize money and adding freebies. We can also incentivize (ex. someone who has submitted # of photos or have won # times can get a prize --- free travel to-, free entry to-, be featured in-). Partnerships can also help support contributors to conduct activities in their localities (ex. reaching out to DOT and collaborate with them for their annual Tourism Week/Day event - the contributor can be the point person from PhilWiki Community). It would also be better if the activity can also give back to the community, so it is more meaningful/purposeful. Lyraauce (talk) 05:31, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
What photography contests have you joined in so far? RITRATO 2020 Photography Contest by SK San Miguel, Iriga City; TINAGBA FESTIVAL PHOTO COMPETITION 2023 organized by Rainier Photography; Scott Kelby's Worldwide Photo Walk 2023. How can we attract more participants to the Wiki Loves photography contests? Effective social media promotion; collaborate with influencers; engage photography communities, educational institutions and photography schools; create engaging content, such as infographics and videos; providing incentives/prizes and recognition; and, feedback and improvement. What photography contests have you joined in so far?
I have actively participated in photography contests and awards such as the Sony World Photography Awards, Nikon Photo Contest, Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards, Comedy Wildlife, Agora Awards, 35 Awards, PA2F Environmental Photography Awards 2023, Vienna International Photography Awards, Wiki Loves Earth and any more. In the Local scene, I have joined various contest such as WLEPH, PAGCOR Photography Contest and a few more.
How can we attract more participants to the Wiki Loves photography contests?
I think, more Social media engagements and visibility. Engage with photography clubs, and online communities like Facebook Groups. Create a promotional effort to a specific region in the country highlighting their local landmarks. And I would love the concept of organizing a photo exhibition featuring the winning photographs from each of those contests in the current year.
How can we engage the local contributors in conducting online/offline activities such as photo walks and adding photos on Wikipedia articles?
Establishing a Local Wiki User Group would be good.
What other local or national photography contests can we organize for 2024?
Local artistry and daily life , street life or street photography. WikiLoves Environment(Environmental Photography Awards/Contest) Micluna (talk) 13:33, 16 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
What other local or national photography contests can we organize for 2024?
Wiki Loves Festivals would be a great addition since Foklore has a very wide coverage. Also, the Philippines has more than 100 festivals and majority of it are less known and unheard. Herbertkikoy (talk) 06:31, 18 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

B. Strategy Track - GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, museums) outreach activities edit

What GLAM institutions within your locality can you identify, and how often do you visit them? What important collections in these institutions can be documented through photography or digitization? How can we establish partnership and promote open access in these institutions? Filipinayzd (talk) 16:16, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Kamarin Art Gallery, occasionally, Bicolano artist's opus, books and art pieces, vintage pieces of equipment and tools on display. UNC museum, rarely, includes a variety of pre-ware, post-war, and other vintage collections of the founders and owners of the university. im not particularly sure about establishing partnership let alone promoting open access, as an artist myself, it has been very difficult to promote my own art, and to penetrate these art galleries to showcase my art. most of the time it's only the best and only the known, and the ones that would benefit their cause. Pacific brent (talk) 03:20, 8 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Since, some of the participants will be coming from different regions, I highly suggest we also visit the Raul Roco Library and the Jesse Robredo Museum. Robredo Museum holds art exhibits and showcases the life, the legacy, and the journey of Robredo to becoming an icon of good governance. Meanwhile, Roco Library has a collection of old manuscripts that we can digitize and has memorabilia of the late senator. As for partnerships, I am not sure of that but maybe we can include that as point of discussion when we meet with the museum director. Daragang Nagueña (talk) 10:29, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Cabadbaran is a small but developing city, it doesn't have great public GLAMs. However, there are plenty of heritage houses here. The DOT in our locality "had" a plan to document these heritage houses to create virtual tours. We can also help contribute to virtual catalogs usually used for in-house apps - which museums in other countries do. This idea can be bigger. Apart from that, we can tap the Butuan City Council for Culture, Heritage and the Arts Visual Arts Committee, they need help featuring local culture and heritage and bringing these to the youth, keeping it relevant through digitization. Lyraauce (talk) 05:41, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
In Naga City, Camarines Sur, Philippines, I frequently visit several notable GLAM institutions, including the Kamarin Art Gallery, Savage Mind Book Library, UNC Museum, and Jesse Robredo Museum. These institutions not only ignite my creativity but also provide valuable insights into politics, history, and various other fields. Whether I have projects or simply want to indulge in my passion for learning, these institutions offer me a vibrant world of art, literature, and cultural heritage. From captivating artworks to diverse book collections and exhibitions on local history and the legacy of Jesse Robredo, these institutions enrich my understanding of the world and inspire me to explore new horizons.
When it comes to documenting the valuable collections housed in these institutions, it is crucial to respect and adhere to their policies and guidelines. Some institutions may have restrictions on photography to ensure the integrity and preservation of their collections. However, with proper permission and careful handling, it is possible to document certain items through photography or digitization, thereby creating digital archives and online exhibitions.
To foster partnerships and promote open access in these institutions, I would like to suggest the following strategies:
Firstly, I recommend reaching out to the GLAM institutions and expressing our genuine interest in supporting their work. By offering our expertise in digital archiving, open access, or technology, we can contribute to their efforts in preserving and sharing our cultural heritage. In addition, organizing workshops or seminars would be an effective way to educate the staff members and stakeholders of these institutions about the benefits of open access and digitization. Sharing success stories and examples from other institutions that have embraced open access can inspire and motivate them to embrace similar approaches. Developing open access policies is another crucial step towards promoting open access in these institutions. By collaborating with the institutions, we can assist in creating and implementing policies that encourage the sharing of digital resources, such as images, documents, and data, while ensuring proper attribution and licensing. Moreover, supporting or initiating digitization projects in collaboration with the institutions would significantly contribute to preserving and making their collections accessible. This could involve digitizing collections, creating metadata, and establishing platforms such as digital repositories or online exhibitions. Lastly, exploring opportunities for fundraising or applying for grants can provide the necessary financial support for digitization projects, technology infrastructure, and capacity building in these GLAM institutions. It is important to remember that each GLAM institution has its own unique needs and requirements. Therefore, engaging in open and collaborative dialogue is crucial to tailor our approach to their specific objectives and resources. Ymirazudis (talk) 05:49, 15 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

What photography contests have you joined in so far? edit

So far I have joined Local, International and national photography contests and some of my photos were recognised internationally. In Wiki loves photography contest it is very important to give a prize in each contest and as a contestant or contributor we must share the said photography contest on social media and guide those interested individual on how to register or to create an account. Kramthenik27 (talk) 17:28, 16 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

I think we can create another wiki loves contest like "Wiki Loves Wildlife", as we all know Philippines is one of the most diverse country when it comes to fauna such as; birds, insects and other native and endemic animals. This contest will gather more participants specially wildlife photographers in the Philippines. Kramthenik27 (talk) 07:02, 18 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

WikiCommons PH Conference 2024 edit

Any suggestions for the 2nd edition of the conference? -Filipinayzd (talk) 06:53, 18 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

VisMin area would be great. Iloilo or Samar area. If Luzon, Ilocos would be great Herbertkikoy (talk) 07:58, 18 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I would suggest that it would be in a place where there is a touch of both the past and the present and I think Ilocos in Luzon would be a good venue for the conference. This would be a level up version of the 2023 conference for sure. Herbertkikoy (talk) 03:15, 29 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
