Description
English: "Flanders Cross" for Corporal Frederick Cater. This is the battlefield cross which would have marked the temporary grave of Corporal Frederick Cater of 2/6th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment a native of Ashill. He was killed in action at the 'Battle of Fromelles' on 19th July 1916, and was later reburied in the Laventie Commonwealth War Graves cemetery near La Gorgue in northern France. His cross is affixed to the wall of St. Nicholas Church, Ashill adjacent to the village war memorial on which his name appears with that of his younger brother Osborne who was also killed in action on the Somme on 22nd August 1918. The Cater brothers are my wife's great uncles.
