Description

Ethiopia has one of the highest rates of early marriage in sub-Saharan Africa. Like many girls, Banchi (pictured), got married when she was 15.

“I remember I didn’t want to spend the night with my husband,” she says. “I was really scared so I went back to my family. My family told my best friend to take me back to him. My friend got me ready - she put eyeliner on me - and took me to his house.

“When we’re having sex, sometimes I feel like I’m about to die, that I might break.”
