Summary edit

Description
English: This monument is near the British Cemetery on Ocracoke Island, in the outer banks of North Carolina. It is dedicated to Augustus Abner McGuire. who is remembered in local folklore as "Old Diver." He died in an offshore diving accident in September of 1913 and was buried in a now unmarked grave. This marker is not situated exactly on his grave site. According to local legend, his ghost is sometimes seen wandering in the area in full early-20th century diving gear, to include a large diving helmet. According to the Village Craftsman (of Ocracoke Island) website: "The ghost of Old Diver, imagined still attired in his cumbersome suit and brass and glass helmet, was invoked to send the youngsters scampering away in fear. Eventually a mantra was established. As children approached McGuire’s grave they would chant, “Old Diver, Old Diver, what do you say?” After a poignant pause, they would intone, in a deep, somber, and drawn-out voice “And…he…says……..’Nothing.’”[1]
