Description

This 5-star hotel in Edinburgh, Scotland was built in 1902 as a traditional railway hotel. It's on the famous "Princes Street" and immediately adjacent to (and above) Waverley Station. For many years it was known as the "North British Hotel", but was usually shortened by locals to "The NB".

During 1988-1990 the hotel closed for a 23 Million Pound refurbishment and re-opened under new ownership as "The Balmoral Hotel". For many Edinburghers, however, it will always be known as The NB.

There is a curious tradition. The Balmoral Clock, which can be seen from many parts of the city has always been set to run 3 minutes fast, thus allowing those who are hurrying for a train to have slightly more time available than is indicated. This tradition has existed since the hotel was built and is maintained to this day.

Over the years the hotel has hosted many famous people and TV programs have been made here. Names include Laurel & Hardy; HRH The Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor); King Haakon of Norway; The Queen Mother; Sophia Loren; Elizabeth Taylor; Paul McCartney; Michael Palin; JK Rowling, (who finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows there in 2007); Oprah and Top Gear. The list goes on and on !
