Description

Teresa, aged 36, lives in Tolosahay, a village on the Philippines island of Leyte, which was badly affected by Typhoon Haiyan. UK funded tarpaulins were delivered here by Plan International about 10 days after the typhoon hit. Their arrival meant that Teresa now has some protection from the elements again.

"When the typhoon came I was very frightened and I hid under the table", she says.

"The wind blew the roof off my house and then it blew away. With the tarpaulin I can now sleep again. The rain doesn't get into my house, and I feel safer than before."

Through working with NGOs like Plan, UK aid is helping 130,000 people construct emergency shelter, feeding more than 175,000 people, giving 250,000 people clean water or basic hygiene and helping deliver millions of pounds worth of essential medicines.

The UK’s support to the UN and Red Cross appeals is also delivering vital supplies to more than 500,000 victims of the typhoon and helping teams on the ground to coordinate relief efforts.
