Summary
editDescription'Dry Waterfall' at Comb Scar - geograph.org.uk - 1175935.jpg |
English: 'Dry Waterfall' at Comb Scar The steep sided dry valley seen here drops vertically into the head of Watlowes valley. The valley was obviously cut by water, which has now found a route underground. Some 600m further north is the Water Sinks, where the stream issuing from Malham Tarn disappears into the ground. During the latter stages of the last ice age water flowed out of, or under a glacier to cut this valley and form a waterfall. When conditions improved and the surface thawed, the water was able to enter fissures and find an underground course. The dry waterfall has had a history of occasionally turning 'wet', but this has happened only rarely in the last 100 years and water has not reached the head of the cove since 1850. |
