Description |
English: 'Hun sinking': rescue of survivors from the 'Blücher' (?), 1915 The British destroyer on the left appears to be an 'Acheron ' (I)-class ship and the subject is probably the rescue of the crew of the German armoured cruiser 'Blücher' (1908) at the Battle of Dogger Bank. She capsized and sank soon after noon on 24 January 1915 after being pounded by four British battle-cruisers and hit by numerous torpedoes. British destroyers were effecting a rescue when they were bombed by a German Zeppelin and had to withdraw. The number of survivors varies from 234 to about 270 depending on the sources used. Whether the received title of 'Hun sinking' appears on the back remains to be checked, since not visible on the image. |
