A train has derailed through the fault of a secretary, who decided to improvise as a mechanic. At around 4 pm on 14 August 1930, a Biên Hòa industrielle et forestière (BIF) train was derailed, under the following conditions: Engineer Khoa had driven BIF locomotive No 2, hauling wood between Bến Nôm logging camp and Trảng Bom. At this last station, the secretary Ngoan, as soon as the whistle announced the train's departure, pushing the mechanic away and took control of the locomotive himself. Khoa did not dare to protest (or at least, he said so) because of Ngoan's superiority as secretary. As soon as he took charge of the locomotive, Ngoan opened the regulator fully, increasing to the maximum speed and causing a derailment. Although he realised the danger, the mechanic made no attempt to intervene. The train derailed some 500m from the station. The overturned locomotive and wagons lay on the railroad tracks. Secretary Huynh van Nghi, who was also in the locomotive, was injured. The secretary who had decided to improvise as a mechanic was arrested. |
