Description

Pakhuis Santos was met zijn zes verdiepingen en een oppervlakte van 1140 vierkante meter lange tijd het grootste en modernste pakhuis van Rotterdam. Het was bedoeld voor de opslag van Braziliaanse Santos-koffie.

Opdrachtgever was het Blaauwhoedenveem. In 1878 had deze van origine Amsterdamse firma een Rotterdams filiaal opgericht. J.J. Kanters was huisarchitect van het Blaauwhoedenveem.

Het gebouw is 24,5 meter hoog, 32,5 meter breed en 34,5 meter diep. Het heeft een constructie van geklonken gietijzeren kolommen. De verdiepingsvloeren zijn van hout. De bakstenen gevels zijn versierd met hardstenen banden, hoekstenen en dorpels. Twee verticale rijen houten laaddeuren doorbreken de regelmatige gevelcompositie. De vier lierhuizen boven de verticale rij deuren zijn weggebroken; de borstwering is daarna doorgetrokken.

Het pakhuis staat aan de zuidzijde van de nieuw aangelegde Rijnhaven. Aanvankelijk zouden er nog vier gelijksoortige pakhuizen worden gebouwd. Doordat het pakhuis niet direct aan de kade grensde bleken de gebruiksmogelijkheden beperkt te zijn.
