Description
English: Two-panel cartoon in Ghimpele, the Romanian liberal paper, commenting on the situation in Rome and the Papal States. At the time, several radical groups, including one headed by Giuseppe Garibaldi, attempted to occupy Rome and integrate it within a larger Italian state. Ghimpele, taking Garibaldi's side, satirizes the Papacy's panic and hypocrisy in front of this (abortive) revolutionary coup. Left panel: Pope Pius IX addresses a threatening crowd of angry radicals, identified by their Phrygian caps, with the words: Romanilorŭ! ("Romans! Street gangs were Rome's salvation in pagan times: today, in Christian times, with civilization reigning, it is up to you to save her. To your deaths, then, and my my blessing be with you!"). Right panel: Pius takes the back door exit, carrying moneybags and other items. The caption is a Romanian proverb: Fuga e ruşinósă, dar e sânâtósă ("Flight may be shameful, but it keeps one healthy").
