De Rotterdam (V) is één van de bekendste naoorlogse Nederlandse passagiersschepen, in dienst van de Holland Amerika Lijn. Het maakte tussen 1959 en eind 2000 het laatste decennium mee van de trans-Atlantische lijnvaart en was daarna een succesvol cruiseschip. Sinds 4 augustus 2008 ligt het schip voor enkele jaren (in elk geval tot 2015) aan het Derde Katendrechtse Hoofd in de Maashaven in Rotterdam als drijvend multifunctioneel centrum. Op 27 oktober 1955 bestelde de Holland-Amerika Lijn (HAL) het schip bij de Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij NV (RDM) in Rotterdam. Op 14 december 1956 werd onder bouwnummer 300 de kiel van het schip gelegd. Koningin Juliana doopte het schip op 13 september 1958 waarna het tewater werd gelaten. Op 11 juli 1959 vond de eerste proefvaart plaats en op 20 augustus 1959 droeg de werf het schip tijdens de officiële proefvaart, wederom in aanwezigheid van koningin Juliana, aan de HAL over. De Rotterdam was het vijfde schip van die naam voor de HAL, vandaar: "Rotterdam (V)". Bron: Rotterdam (V) Edit: 4 november 2012 Het stoomschip Rotterdam blijft in Rotterdam. Eigenaar woningcorporatie Woonbron heeft overeenstemming bereikt over de verkoop van het schip met WestCord Hotels (o.a. eigenaar van Hotel New York op de Kop van Zuid) voor een bedrag van € 29,9 miljoen. Woonbron spendeerde zelf € 250 miljoen aan koop en onderhoud, voorwaar een fiks verlies. Woonbron dacht in 2005 aankoop en renovatie met € 6 miljoen te bekostigen. |
