Summary edit

Description A print of circa 1725 showing Southampton or Bloomsbury Square in London. The reason for the artist's uncertainty about the name is that the ownership of the freehold of the square had recently passed from the Earls of Southampton, after whom it had been named, to the Dukes of Bedford. Bloomsbury Square later became the settled name. The view is facing north. The large house with the front courtyard is Bedford House, formerly Southampton House, which was demolished circa 1800.
