Description

In der Stahlbetonkuppel des Großen Tempels von Abu Simbel:

"Das Innere der Tempel wird – teilweise hängend – von darüber befindlichen Stahlbetonkuppeln gehalten, die des Großen Tempels misst 140 Meter. Es handelt sich hierbei also nicht mehr um wirkliche Höhlentempel. Die Kuppel wird äußerlich durch aufgeschütteten Sand, Geröll und Original-Felsen (darunter die Originalfassade) verborgen, wodurch der ursprüngliche Eindruck eines Felsentempels gewahrt bleibt. Für die damalige Zeit stellte dies eine bautechnische Leistung dar, die vereinzelt mit dem Bau der Tempel durch Ramses II. verglichen wird. Die Kosten für die Tempelverlegung beliefen sich auf etwa 80 Millionen US-Dollar, die von über 50 Ländern gespendet wurden. Abu Simbel wurde zu einem der Anlässe für die Verabschiedung der UNESCO-Welterbekonvention von 1972 und der Aufstellung der Liste des UNESCO-Welterbes."
